Program:    A Moodle Implementation by Will Dozier

Over the last few years we have seen demonstrations of the features of Moodle in various ISPI presentations.  But we have yet to see an actual implementation of course in Moodle.

Will Dozier will demonstrate the second iteration of the Department of Defense (DoD) New Supervisors Course.  Agencies are required to provide new supervisors with training within one year of their appointment as a supervisor. This course is a blended learning solution designed to help all the components of the DoD to meet that requirement. The course consists of approximately 40 hours of online instruction conducted via Moodle over a three week period and one week of resident training held at DoD’s Executive Management Training Center (EMTC) in Southbridge, MA.  We will take a tour of the live course, discuss the development process, and focus on lessons learned - including problems Will has not yet solved!

Will Dozier is a Senior Instructional Designer with FPMI’s Federal Management Institute, where he currently manages all of FPMI’s off-the-shelf training courses.  He has designed and developed numerous courses for the military and various federal agencies and won the 2006 National Institute for Packaging, Handling and Logistics Engineers Design Competition for Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Packaging Courseware.  Will has a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and an M.A. in Adult and Higher Education

Last month watched some interesting videos on memory, perception, and attention and enjoyed a discussion on how each impacts learning.  As we usually do, the November and December meetings are combined.  There is no planned program for this meeting, so take this opportunity to network with your ISPI colleagues.

In January we will resume our programs with a discussion on the HPT model.  We will also elect chapter officers for 2012.

ISPI-SA Chapter September 2011 Meeting Notice

E-mail Print PDF

In August we had a joint meeting with the San Antonio chapter of ASTD.  Toni and Chris Christensen demonstrated the potential for melding knowledge management with just-in-time training.

For September, we’re back to our normal 4th Thursday meeting.

Date:          Thursday, September 22, 2011
Time:         6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Location:    Apple Annie’s Restaurant, 2177 Northwest Military Highway
Cost:          See menu at http://www.appleanniesrestaurant.com/menu.asp#restaurant

Program:    Occeumetrics: How Training Needs Drive Selection and Classification Decision Making in Large Organizations,
presented by Mr. Johnny Weissmuller, Executive Director of the Innovation Center for Occupational Data Applications and Practices

In large organizations like the military or the IRS, HR departments often send groups of semi-qualified applicants to fill low-level job vacancies.  These candidates need both training and "eyes-on" evaluation to be placed into the most appropriate jobs.  This is known as the classic "Person-Job Match" problem. To do this matching scientifically you need both people measures (like tests, assessments or interviews) AND you need defensible job measures from a detailed job or occupational analysis.

This presentation addresses how person-job measures affect management's perception of the choice between "adding more up-front job training" and "hiring smarter people."

Want to know the origin of the term "Occeumetrics?"  Join us on September 22nd and find out!

ISPI-SA Chapter August 2011 Chapter Meeting Notice

Greetings!

Many of you have been busy with summer activities these last few weeks and missed two excellent presentations.

In June, Devi Mazumdar presented different models of cloud computing and led a discussion on how cloud computing may affect training & education.  In July, Dr. Kristi Leonard gave a presentation on the cognitive theory of multimedia learning.  We enjoyed seeing many examples of how to improve learning through the good visual design and had a lively discussion on some disputed areas of the theory.

Ready to get out of the summer heat? Come to this month’s meeting for lots of good food and the opportunity to meet other training/learning professionals in the San Antonio community.  We are having a joint meeting with the San Antonio Chapter of ASTD.

Date:          Wednesday, August 17, 2011 (NOT our usual 4th Thursday)
Time:         6 p.m. to 8 p.m
Location:    DoubleTree Hotel (410 and McCullough)
Cost:          $20 for members, $25 for non-members
                  Set menu (vegetarian selection available)
RSVP by Monday, August 15 to get the member rate

Program:    The Future of Corporate Training, presented by Toni and Chris Christensen

Corporate training has never faced as significant changes as it does today.  Trainers and learning and development departments are scrambling to e-learning tools and practices.  But that’s not the complete story.  Futurist Chris Christensen and futures researcher Toni Christensen will demonstrate how currently-available computer technology permits a return to an older and much more robust method for developing individual and group competencies and conveying essential job knowledge for the workforce of the future.  If you don’t know what to do about the changing nature of corporate training, you can’t afford to miss this entertaining and stimulating presentation.  The training industry is changing and its future will be different - why not understand and prepare for those changes?

Hope to see you all there!
